SAN JOSE, CA (March 20, 2018) — Four children sustained minor injuries after a hit-and-run driver crashed into their school bus on Thursday, March 15. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash involved a bus carrying 21 students together with school staff and chaperones from the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District for a field trip in Berkeley. The CHP said that at about 9:50 a.m., the 2009 Blue Bird-manufactured school bus was moving northbound in the lanes of Highway 101 near Oakland Road when it slowed for traffic. Before the driver could completely stop, he allegedly sensed an impact from behind and pulled the bus over to the freeway shoulder. A 2004 tan Ford Taurus that reportedly rear-ended the bus also pulled over, but soon after fled the scene, according to CHP.

Fortunately, before it drove off, a student on the bus used a smartphone and took a photo of the Ford, including a clear image of the license plate and a partial photo of the driver. San Jose Fire Capt. Mitch Matlow said that two students on the bus in their early teens were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. According to Lee, four children reported some kind of injury and all are described as non-life threatening. The rest of the students were released to school staff or chaperones. According to a news release, the CHP described the suspect driver driving the Ford is an elderly white woman. The license plate number of the vehicle reads 8BEJ916 and was registered to a Santa Clara address. Any person with information regarding the collision can call CHP Officer David Morasco at 408-467-5400. Traffic accidents are frightening and can trigger anyone to react mindlessly. If you have been involved in a car accident, do not flee the scene. You will be facing more severe consequences when you leave. Stay at the scene and wait for authorities to arrive.
